The Assisted Living Waiver and Stanislaus County
California’s Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) is a real Medi-Cal program — but it doesn’t currently operate in Stanislaus County. Here’s what it normally covers, and what Stanislaus families actually have access to instead.
What the Assisted Living Waiver normally covers
In participating counties, the ALW lets Medi-Cal pay for the care portion (not room-and-board) of assisted living in a participating facility, as an alternative to nursing-home placement. It’s designed for people who need a nursing-facility level of care but could safely live in assisted living if the cost of the care itself were covered.
Stanislaus County is not a participating county
As of this writing, Stanislaus is not one of the counties where the ALW operates. The confirmed current participating counties are: Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Sonoma.
Stanislaus families shouldn’t take this as bad news about Medi-Cal generally — Medi-Cal’s standard nursing-facility coverage is not affected by this gap. The ALW is one specific alternative pathway to avoid a nursing home; it is not the only way Medi-Cal helps pay for long-term care.
What to ask about instead
